Dear Reader,

Think about thinking.

Learn about learning.

To do so, you must practice metacognition, the ultimate meta-skill for developing and actualizing your potential. Those who practice become metacogs.

If you, too, are on this journey, get my guide to metacognition and starter Notion Template for managing your mind and life.

Metacognitive skills are like any other; they can be developed by writing, speaking, and studying. When you research metacognition (declarative knowledge) and implement it, you create [procedural knowledge].

Muscle memory, for the mind.

As a meta-skill, it accelerates the adoption and development of any other skill.

One form of practicing metacognition is mindfulness meditation. This is just one skill set in the tool belt of potential metacognitive skills you can acquire.

Working in the hospital in academic medicine, I read a heartbreaking patient chart today. This patient had a slew of symptoms, all of which were directly connected to her declining mental health. She reported intense depressive symptoms and had developed numerous conditions. What begins in the mind can have a domino effect on your health.

-Arthritis

-Headaches

-Chronic joint pain

-High blood pressure

-High cholesterol

-Stomach problems

-Weakened immune system

These are all exacerbated by a negative mental state.

All living things experience entropy.

We do not live forever.

Everything in the universe breaks down.

But we can prolong or extend our quality life-years or even our lifespan by maintaining our overall health, starting in mind. Extend your quality of life and expand your time to impact the world potentially.

Taking a third-person, nonjudgmental view of your own experience and sensations in the body can help you slow your runaway thoughts, become grounded in the present, and maintain a positive mental state.

Practicing “mindfulness” isn’t just another healthy habit or thing you should do.

It just might be the key to your growth as a person.

In my growth, I am trying to develop my metacognition for overall well-being and increase my effectiveness in learning.

I am working with those trying to improve further their ability to learn and other pre-meds like me get into professional school. I could work with you next (Link)!

I have two degrees already, but starting medical school next year will make the last several years feel elementary in hindsight. I know that I can accomplish my goal of becoming a physician with minimal stress and maximum effectiveness through metacognition.

I hope you will consider doing the same.

Remember, with Metacognition:

Achieve mental mastery.

Gain metacognitive skills.

Become a better learner

Think about your thinking.

Learn about learning.

Until next time,

Jake the Metacog
